Dr. Paul VanSweden Joins Personalized Hematology-Oncology to Grow Primary Care Practice

 In Practice News, Primary Care

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (Mar. 9, 2022) – Personalized Hematology-Oncology of Wake Forest announces that Dr. Paul VanSweden has joined the practice. Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Dr. VanSweden will focus on primary care and internal medicine, as well as assist in treating patients in the practice’s Infusion Center.

“I’ve been quite impressed with Dr. VanSweden as a hospitalist,” said Dr. Francisco Antonio Castillos, III, lead physician at Personalized Hematology-Oncology. “While working with him at WakeMed Raleigh, I’ve seen him care for very sick patients – including intensive care patients – correcting their abnormalities in a short period of time and seeing them discharged from the hospital.”

Dr. VanSweden joins Personalized Hematology-Oncology after nearly a decade as a hospitalist at WakeMed Hospitals. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine and did his residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. He is also a graduate of Grand Valley State University in Michigan with Bachelor’s of Science degrees in Health Science and Biology Pre-Medicine.

“I started my career as a hospitalist and thought I would be a hospitalist until the day came to hang up my stethoscope,” says Dr. VanSweden. “Then God led me in a new direction – to a practice setting that is free of the complications associated with large healthcare organizations. It became time for me to get back to a simple model that focuses completely on the patient. As I join the practice, I hope to apply my years of knowledge and experience from the hospital to address many of the conditions that commonly lead to hospitalization.”

Dr. VanSweden is particularly interested in helping patients improve management of diabetes and high blood pressure – two conditions that are slow, silent killers in the world of internal medicine. He also has a special interest in helping patients build healthier lifestyles by tackling obesity and reducing tobacco and alcohol use.

An enthusiast of traveling and the outdoors, Dr. VanSweden enjoys spending time with his wife and four children. He is a member of New Salem Church in Pittsboro, N.C., and has been a troop leader for TrailLife USA since 2014.

Having Dr. VanSweden focused on primary care will allow more time for Dr. Castillos to develop new cancer treatments, a core specialty at Personalized Hematology-Oncology. The private practice specializes in genome cancer treatment, blood disorders and infusion therapies of all types.
