What is a Certified Infusion Center?

In Cancer Support, Hematology, Practice News

Thanks to modern advancements in infusion therapy, patients with serious illnesses can be successfully treated intravenously (into the vein) or subcutaneously (under the skin). When a patient’s condition is so severe that he or she cannot take oral medications or treatment of the disease requires an alternate approach, infusion therapy is a safe and effective way to treat many diseases.

Personalized Hematology/Oncology of Wake Forest is proud to announce we are now a Certified Infusion Center. Although we have been treating cancers and blood disorders through infusion therapy for years, we now have the ability to treat many other conditions.

What is infusion therapy?

With infusion therapy, medication is administered using a sterile catheter inserted straight into a vein and secured. In this way, the drug is delivered intravenously. Medications may also be infused through other non-oral routes, such as epidurals in the spinal cord and intramuscular injections.

What is a certified infusion center?

An infusion center is an outpatient clinic that is certified to administer infusion therapy. These medical facilities have advanced equipment and competent staff who specialize in infusions. Infusion therapy has traditionally been administered only in hospitals. Due to an emphasis on cost-containment in health care and developments in the clinical administration of the treatment, outpatient infusion centers are now more common.

Certified infusion centers are licensed by a state board and meet strict standards and regulations set by the board and the government.

What diseases can be treated with infusion therapy?

Infusion therapy is commonly used to treat diseases that cannot be treated with oral medication. In addition to cancer and blood diseases, Personalized Hematology/Oncology of Wake Forest provides treatment for the following conditions:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Lupus
  • Other conditions/diseases treated with injections

What are the benefits of certified infusion centers?

Seeking treatment at an infusion center means you will get personalized care, tailored to your needs. Instead of being shuffled through a hospital system, a private infusion center like Personalized Hematology/Oncology sees a limited number of patients each day, allowing us to take our time and fully understand your needs and concerns.

Infusion centers also offer an alternative to expensive long-term, inpatient care. With outpatient infusions, you will be able to resume a normal life quicker and spend more time at home.
